The Hatchet Response Activity

How did you react to Brian’s thoughts and actions? Do you think he is sensible or unreasonable?

I was surprised that he was having flash backs of his mother with another man and missing his friend Terry, but I think that he is really brave to take control of the plan while it was in the air, and even though he is week he is still trying to build himself some shelter.

What lesson does Brian recall from Mr Pepich, his English teacher? How does that lesson help Brian as he sits beside the lake?

His teacher Mr Pepich would always say stay positive and he is his best asset. It gave him motivation to build shelter and stay alive.

Sometimes Brian’s thoughts go back to an earlier time, when he was with his mother. What effect do these “breaks” have on the story.

The “breaks” answer the question about “The secret” and why his parents are divorced. The effects it made was that he felt sad about the fact his parents are divorced and he is carrying a lot of weight on his shoulders.

Are Brian’s reactions to the pilot’s death and the crash realistic? Does Brian seem like a real thirteen-year-old boy?

Brian’s reaction to the pilots death and the crash was kind of surprising because usually 13 year olds cry but not once in the story did it say that he was crying so that tells me that he is brave. To me Brian doesn't sound like he is 13, but I think he is around 15-16 years old.

If you would like to read "The Hatchet"

The Hatchet
By Gary Paulsen

Brian is a city boy. Not used to living rough. Until his plane crash-lands in the Canadian woods. All he has is a hatchet- and a desperate will to survive. Now Brian must learn to live the hard way.

Water safety with life jackets

Today we learned how to use life jackets. A life jacket needs to keep you afloat when you are out in the ocean and or keep you warm. We should always wear a life jackets when we are on boats, going fishing and other important reasons.

Explanation on Tupapakurua Falls Track area

Tupapakurua Falls Track area

A hike is when you take a long walk in the forest or in the wilderness. The track is about 11 km return from Fishers Road parking area and it takes 4 – 5 hr return to Tupapakurua Falls lookout.
Before you start your hike you need to tell someone your plans and when you’ll be back so they can send out a rescue team to find you if you get lost. You also need to take some food ( in case you get hungry), water, wind proof and waterproof clothing ( in case of bad weather), sturdy shoes or boots, sunglasses and sunscreen and a first aid kit. During your hike it might get rugged, it also might get slippery of muddy when it rains.
There is a wonderful variety of plant and tree species with tawa, mature rimu, Miro and totara.
Climbing back up from the stream, the track has beautiful forest views and good lookout points to the waterfalls.

Maths Graphs

Today during maths I learnt to present my work as a line graph and area graph.

Maths comparing and interpreting

Today me and my best buddy Anamanu were comparing and interpreting graphs together.

Travel to school graph:-

We discovered that the most amount of students that travel to school is by motor. Least students travel to school is by train maybe because they live far away from their school.

Height yr8 girls and boys:-

While we were comparing the height for yr8 girls and boys we discovered that more than 30 boys and girls were the same height which was 160 cm.

Lunchtime activities:-

We discovered that yr5 students  have the enthusiasm and probably have the energy to run and play, as for the yr 10 students most of them just sat there wasting there playtime. We wonder is Students get older do they get lazier.

Comment back for your thoughts?
